Wrought iron holdbacks which are often black usually have a traditional design. They would originally have been forged by the village blacksmith to match the wrought iron curtain rails. Wrought iron hold backs are usually a long length of metal with screw holes at one end to fix the bracket to the wall which then bends back horizontally over itself to form a curve with which the curtains drape inside.
The visible ends of the holdback generally have a detailed design such as a cage end, ball end or shepherds crook coordinating with the finial on the pole. The designs are quite simple but very effective as the black looks stunning against the pale walls surrounding the window. Wrought iron holdbacks are best suited to a traditional style of curtain fabric and window treatment.
