We can never hope to re-create the sultry look of the Orient, the stunning length of flame red Thai silk that you purchased on holiday will never capture the light as it had when you bought it. Nor will the brightly painted terracotta pots from the Mediterranean look as sun blessed as they did at your holiday villa in Spain. The high quality of the daylight in these latitudes enlivens the rich colours making them brighter than bright.

Us mid-northern Europeans have settled on a preference for slightly muted colours, the low level of natural light being best suited to the more subtle shades of creams, soft pinks, greens and blues. That is not to say that we cannot break from the norm without a degree of success, but perhaps it's best to play safe and keep the walls and flooring to pale colours, only introducing colour with panache in the soft furnishings and window finishes.

Blinds are becoming more and more popular in the modern home where management of space is often an important factor. Window blinds are available in every colour imaginable, with speciality features to control the daylight and sunlight levels. They can create a mood without being too overbearing.
