Window security is not such an issue in Mediterranean countries, as it is perfectly acceptable to have bars at the windows. Once you are over the initial shock of feeling you have been confined to a prison, it is nice to be able to leave your windows open at night. After a while, the bars drift into oblivion, and it's worth the peace of mind.

Window locks are an obvious deterrent, coupled with good quality double glazing. Careful thought in your choice of window treatments can also give a degree of protection in as much as valuable articles will not be so readily on show for all to see from the outside.

Privacy

Unlined Roman blinds or Roller blinds, ideal as a bedroom or kitchen blind, will offer privacy during the day whilst still allowing a high level of light to enter the room. A secondary window treatment will be necessary as the evening draws in, as the benefits of the translucent fabric during the day will not be sufficient to give any degree of privacy at night when the window is backlit with light from the room.

Sheer or voile curtains are not only aesthetically pleasing - softening the effect, for instance, of a bedroom window - but will also, if kept closed during the day, obstruct the vision of passers-by.
