Blinds Special Finishes Explained

Flame Retardant

Soft furnishing fabrics used for curtains or blinds in a commercial situation, by law have to have a special coating or finish that is fire retardant. The coating on the fabric gives it a stiff finish which may sometimes affect the look of the curtains or blinds, as they will not hang so readily in soft folds. Washing fabrics that have a flame retardant finish is not recommended as it will remove the products used in the process, therefore greatly reducing the effectiveness of the special finish.

Washable

Curtain or blind fabrics that have this label may be hand or machine washed on a gentle 40 degree programme. It is always best to check the washing label and wash the blinds or curtains in accordance with the washing instructions. Do not use a strong detergent as it will remove the finish of the fabric, making it lifeless and limp. Smooth out the fabric when it has been washed, or let it drip dry.

Blackout

Curtains or blind fabrics that have been finished with this special feature will completely block daylight from entering through the window. It is achieved with a coating on the reverse side of the fabric. The coating will cause the fabric to be stiffer and heavier than it would otherwise have been, but this particular finish is ideal for windows in offices where daylight can effect the vision on a computer or projection screen, or in bedrooms where early morning sunlight or street lighting can affect the sleep pattern of the occupants of the room.

Dim Out

This special finish used for curtain fabrics or window blind fabrics will reduce the amount of light coming into a room, creating a soft ambient light. It is ideal for south facing rooms where the heat and light from the sun may need to be controlled at certain times of the day.

Wipe Clean

Soft furnishing fabrics with this special finish can be wiped clean with a soft damp cloth and a very mild detergent, keeping the window treatment looking its best. These fabrics should never be washed, as it will seriously affect the finish of the fabric. This type of window treatment will be ideal in a commercial setting or as a kitchen or bathroom blind where continual handling may soil the fabric. An easy care fabric finish that can be quickly freshened up with a damp cloth will keep the window treatment looking its best at all times.

Light Reflective

The light reflective properties of this type of soft furnishing fabric will help to maintain a pleasant environment for either living or working. The finish will help to keep the sun out during the summer months and retain the warmth in a room during the winter.

Glare Reduction

Bright sunlight can be very disruptive when viewing a computer or television screen. Window blinds made from this specially developed fabric will shield the effect of sunlight entering a room. This creates a more comfortable environment for a commercial office, a bright south facing lounge or a children's playroom.

Teflon Coated

Soft furnishing fabrics that display this symbol have been protected by a special fabric finish that is resistant to stains and spills, making this a good choice for a window finish in a children's playroom, for hotel bedrooms and for communal areas or commercial offices.
