Measuring an Existing Pole or Track

If you have an existing curtain track or curtain pole all you will need to do is measure the total length, excluding the finials (this will give you the total length you require to start shopping.

Step by Step Measuring for New Tracks & Poles

Start by measuring the recess width of the window, shown as (A) and note this measurement down.

Now measure each side of the window recess (B) this measurement is usually 15cm to 20cm on either side to enable the curtains to be pulled back away from the window to not restrict the daylight, again note these measurements down.

Add these three measurements together and this will give you the pole or track length you require. Example; B + A + B = Length required.

Now you have the length you require you can start shopping.

Note: The Pole lengths do not include the finials. The finials lengths are shown in the finials section.

Poles and tracks are manufactured in set lengths. If your measurements do not coincide with the standard lengths then you must order the next size up from your measurement and cut to suit.

For extra large windows then you will need two or more poles joined together with a joiner.

How to Measure for Made to Measure Poles & Rails

Custom tracks & poles are manufactured to your exact measurements.

Please refer to the step by step instructions above for basic window measuring.

When measuring a recess (A) or between two walls you must subtract 1.5cm from the dimension (A). Example; (A) ? 1.5cm = Pole Length.

Remember measure at the precise point where the pole is to be located.

Wall & Top fixed

When entering the specification for your chosen made to measure pole or track, you will have the option of top fixed or wall fixed.

This enables us to send you the correct fitments with your order.

Wall Fixed

This term is used when the support brackets are fixed into the wall surrounding the window recess.

Top Fixed

This term is used when you are fitting the support brackets into the ceiling or the top of the window recess.

Cord Measuring

If measuring for a made to measure corded pole or track please note:-

  • The side you wish the cord operation to hang, making sure a large piece of furniture will not be in the way.
  • The drop of the cord required, this length should be approximately the same length as the curtains to be fitted. For tall windows the cord will need to be measured down to a point where it can be easily reached.

Handy Hints

When taking measurements its best to get someone to hold the other end of the tape as even metal tape measures will flop over when extended.

All the measurements of our tracks and poles are in centimeters (cm) so if you have measured in inches please use our conversion calculator to convert them into (cm) to avoid confusion when ordering your pole.

If you have limited fixing space above your window, take this dimension and note it down. Check the bracket depth of your chosen product to ensure it will fit within the space above your window opening.

If space is limited either side of the window a smaller finial would be best suited. Finial lengths are given in the finial section.

Pole lengths can be shortened using a hacksaw or pipe cutters.Remember to measure twice cut once.
