Washing Fabric Blinds

Washing Fabric Blinds

Dry cleaning is the recommended method of cleaning most types of roman blinds. Very few fabric blinds can be machine washed, as most soft furnishing fabrics will shrink slightly when washed. Personally, we would always recommend - if washing is permitted - that the blind is hand washed. This is to ensure minimum distortion.

Gently place the blind in a large bowl or, better still, the bath, and gently slosh up and down in the water with absolutely no rubbing or ringing of the fabric. The blind should then be allowed to drip dry with as many of the creases smoothed out of the fabric as possible. Normally vacuuming the blind should suffice. Many ornate drapes and soft furnishings such as you would find in stately homes and castles have never been washed or dry cleaned, only being changed at great expense perhaps every 100 years or so. Some types of roller blinds are wipe-cleanable, but then, if that is allowed, it will perhaps jeopardise your choice of trimming.
