What are Eyelet Curtains?

Eyelet curtains do not have a heading tape with curtain hooks to fix the curtains to the pole. The curtains have eyelets or grommets as they are sometimes known fitted in the heading of the curtain fabric. The eyelets are equally spaced across the top of the curtains so when the pole is passed through these eyelets, it creates a nice wave shape across the top of the curtains as they consortina across the pole.

These poles are supplied without any rings, as they are not required, and many eyelet poles are supplied with extendable brackets so the projection of the pole can be adjusted away from the wall, allowing enough clearance behind the pole for the ‘S’ shape wave heading of the curtains.

Can Also Be Used For Tab Top Curtains

Tab top curtains have contrasting or matching strips of fabric sewn into the top of the curtains, so again will not require curtain rings. This is a very informal curtain arrangement that makes a fun finish especially for children's windows. They will not operate as easily as eyelet curtains as the material tabs will not pass along the pole as well as the eyelets.

It is important to ensure the correct pole diameter is chosen for the size of the eyelets or tabs in your curtains. Normally the internal diameter of the eyelets or tabs is between 38mm (1 1/2") – 40mm (1 9/16") so a pole diameter of 28mm (1 1/4") will leave enough clearance for a smooth operation.

Design Tip

The colour of the curtain eyelets is also worth considering when choosing the pole. You may wish to match the colour of the eyelets with the pole for a contrast between the two. If you do decide to go for the contrasting option, make sure it is a definate contrast or it will just look a bad match.
