In this guide, we'll delve into everything you need to know about wave curtain tracks, including how to install them, what the wave curtain track effect is and how they work.

What is a Wave Curtain Track?

The wave track is a type of curtain track is specifically designed to create the “wave effect” in curtains. Unlike traditional curtain tracks that may use hooks or rings, the curtains are hung on wave track gliders that are evenly spaced to produce smooth, flowing folds in the curtain fabric whether they are open or closed!
Unlike regular pleated curtains, wave curtains keep their shape with minimal maintenance.

Wave glider materials

Wave tracks are typically made from high-quality materials such as aluminium or steel, ensuring durability and smooth operation. They can be ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted, depending on your preference and the layout of your space. Some wave tracks also feature a motorized option, allowing for remote control operation, which adds a layer of convenience and modern luxury to your home.

How Do Wave Curtain Tracks Work?

Wave curtain tracks work by using a specially designed glider system that allows the curtains to hang in smooth, continuous waves. The gliders are spaced evenly along the track, and each glider is attached to a specific point on the wave heading tape sewn into the top of the curtain.

When the curtain is drawn open or closed, the gliders move smoothly along the track, guiding the fabric into gentle waves. The key to the wave curtain track system is the consistent spacing of the gliders, which ensures that the waves are uniform from top to bottom. This system not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the curtains but also allows them to move effortlessly, making it easy to open and close the curtains as needed.

Which fabrics can I use for wave curtain tracks?

When choosing fabrics for wave curtain tracks, it's important to select materials that complement the sleek, flowing design of the wave effect.

Lightweight to medium weight fabrics recommended

Lightweight to medium-weight fabrics like linen, cotton, voile, and polyester blends work particularly well, as they drape beautifully and enhance the soft, uniform waves that characterize this style.

Heavier fabrics

Heavier fabrics, such as velvet or thick blackout materials, can also be used, but they may require a more robust track system to support the additional weight and ensure smooth operation. For the best results, opt for fabrics with a soft handle and minimal stiffness to maintain the elegant, effortless flow of wave curtains.

Make sure to check the spec of your Wave Curtain Track to ensure it can take the weight of your curtains. The Poles&Blinds  Cameron Fuller Cap System 30 Wave Curtain Track (Wall Fix) is suitable for hanging heavy weight curtains up to 25kg.

Should I choose an 80mm or 60mm glider gap? And how many do I need?

Wave gliders come in two sizes for you to choose between – 60mm or 80mm. These measurements refer to the gap between each glider which create a different look to suit your interior style.

80mm vs 60mm wave glider

80mm creates a wider gap with deeper waves in the fabric.

60mm creates a smaller gap with the appearance of more fabric.

Please note: If space is limited on the sides of your window, the 80mm spacing is recommended. The 60mm option has more gliders and requires more stacking room, while the 80mm spacing uses fewer gliders and occupies less space.

How many gliders do I need?

Don’t worry – when you come to put your track measurements in, we’ll do the calculations for you and make sure the correct number of gliders are included in your pack! Our tracks come with all the accessories needed to fit, plus and easy-to-follow instruction guide.

Make sure to measure the window area first to ensure you have the correct measurements before ordering your tracks. Find the step-by-step guide below.

How much fabric is needed for wave track gliders?

Determining fabric width required for your wave effect curtains will depend on your window width, glider spacing (60mm or 80mm) and whether you have one single curtain or a pair of curtains.

We have outlined the rough steps below, however please refer to the detailed instructions that come with the Wave Track upon ordering. We recommend not to cut your fabric until you are absolutely sure you have the correct width.

  1. 1. Calculate the number of hooks required (don't worry, we include the right amount of hooks you need with the track length and glider spacing you order!)

  2. 2. Use the number of hooks to determine the length of the heading tape. You should measure by the header "pockets" rather than tape length.
(You may need extra pockets if you have an electric track).

  3. 3. Cut your header tape to the exact number of pockets calculated, this will represent the fabric width required.

  4. 4. Now, cut your fabric to the same width, adding on allowances for hems etc.

How to Install Wave Curtain Tracks

Installing wave curtain tracks is a very simple and straightforward process. When you purchase a Poles&Blinds Wave Curtain Track, it comes complete with everything you need like brackets, gliders, finials and an easy-to-follow installation guide.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you install your wave curtain tracks seamlessly:

1. Measure Your Space

Start by measuring the width of your window or the area where you plan to install the wave curtain track. Ensure you leave enough room on either side of the window for the curtains to stack back fully when opened.

2. Choose the Track to Suit Your Space

Wave curtain tracks come in various materials, including metal and plastic. Select a track that suits your decor and the weight of your curtains. For a sleek, modern look, opt for a metal wave curtain track.

3. Mark the Mounting Points

Use a pencil to mark where you'll install the brackets. Ensure the marks are level and evenly spaced. The distance between brackets typically depends on the length of the track but refer to the installation guide.

4. Install the Brackets

Once your mounting points are marked, drill pilot holes and attach the brackets using screws. Make sure the brackets are securely fastened, as they will need to support the weight of the curtains.

5. Attach the Track

After the brackets are in place, attach the wave curtain track to them. Some tracks may snap into place, while others may require screws or clips to secure them.

6. Hang the Curtains

Finally, attach your curtains to the gliders or hooks on the track. Ensure the wave heading tape on the curtain is evenly spaced to create the desired wave effect.

By following these steps, you can install your wave curtain tracks with ease and confidence.
