Why Your Curtain Pole is Sagging And How to Fix It

There's something intensely irritating about your curtains snagging when you're attempting to open or close them. Dealing with it every day can make the frustration become severe. Not only is a sagging curtain pole a nuisance, but it can also look terrible and, over time, even damage your walls.

At Poles and Blinds, we supply high-quality curtain poles and tracks designed to look beautiful and last for many years. Provided you follow a few simple rules and choose the correct setup for your space, sagging should never be an issue. However, if you are currently dealing with a bowing pole, it's not that difficult to fix. You just need to know what's causing the problem.

Solving Your Sagging Curtain Poles

What Causes a Curtain Pole to Sag?

In most cases, the issue comes down to a combination of factors:

Too Much Weight

Curtains can be surprisingly heavy, especially if they're lined, thermal, or blackout styles. The heavier the curtain, the greater the pressure on the pole, causing it to bend in the middle over time.

Lack of Support Brackets

Some curtain poles only have brackets at each end, but that often isn't enough, especially for larger windows. If you add anything but the lightest of curtains without centre support, the poles will almost inevitably sag.  For poles over 2 metres, we recommend installing a central bracket. If you buy a curtain pole set from P&B, the correct number of brackets will be included in your order.

Incorrect Installation

Even heavy-duty curtain tracks can sag if not installed properly. Loose screws, weak wall fixings, or uneven bracket placement can all contribute to the problem. Before drilling, always double check the wall material and whether you will need extra support for your tracks. We also recommend using a cable detector to ensure there are no hidden wires or pipes.

How to Fix and Prevent a Sagging Curtain Pole

Now that you know the causes, here's how to resolve the issue effectively and ensure your Poles and Blinds hardware lasts for years.

1. Add a Centre Support Bracket: One of the simplest and most effective ways to fix a sagging curtain pole is to install an additional bracket in the middle.

2. Upgrade to a Heavy-Duty Track: Heavy-duty curtain tracks are specifically designed to handle greater loads without bending or warping. They're especially useful for large windows and thick curtains. A properly installed curtain track will distribute weight more evenly, making it less prone to bending.

3. Reduce the Curtain Weight: If replacing your hardware isn't ideal, consider lightening the load. Even small reductions in curtain weights can make a noticeable difference. You could:

  • Switch to lighter fabrics.

  • Remove heavy linings.

  • Use holdbacks to reduce strain when curtains are open.

4. Reinforce Your Wall Fixings: Sagging can sometimes be caused by brackets pulling away from the wall rather than the pole itself bending. To fix this, simply check that:

  • Screws are tight.

  • Wall plugs are suitable for your wall type (plasterboard vs masonry).

  • Brackets are securely anchored. If needed, reinstall the brackets using stronger fixings.

Special Considerations for Bay Windows

A bay window curtain pole often requires multiple brackets and precise installation to prevent sagging. Because the pole changes direction, the weight isn’t distributed evenly.

To avoid issues:

  • Use enough support brackets at each bend. For bay window poles, install passing brackets before and after each corner bend  4) to ensure the rings move smoothly.

  • Choose a pole designed specifically for bay windows

  • Consider switching to a flexible curtain track for smoother operation

  • Before buying a pole, always double-check the maximum curtain weight the pole supports. At Poles and Blinds, you can do it in the “Specifications” tab.

Preventing Future Sagging

Once you’ve resolved the issue, a few simple steps can prevent it from happening again:

  • Choose the right hardware for your curtain type

  • Don’t exceed recommended weight limits

  • Install sufficient brackets from the start. For poles 200 cm or more, use 2 end brackets +1 centre bracket (usually with a pole joiner, as many poles come in 2 pieces after 2-meter length). We recommend choosing curtain pole or track sets, rather than buying parts individually and also using all the parts in the set. Alternatively, please call Pole & Blinds for advice.

  • Regularly check fittings for looseness

  • Buy curtain pole or track sets - they include all brackets needed for your length

A sagging curtain pole is annoying, but it can easily become a bigger issue if ignored. Whether you opt for stronger poles, additional brackets, or heavy-duty curtain tracks, don't put off finding a solution for long.
