How to Measure for Curtain Poles

Measuring for curtain poles is much easier than you might think! Whether you're replacing an existing pole or starting fresh, we'll walk you through everything step by step. After reading this guide, you'll feel confident about getting the perfect measurements for your windows.

Tools You'll Need

Method 1: Replacing an Existing Pole

This is the easiest scenario. If you're simply replacing an old pole with a new one, you're already halfway there. Here's what to do:

  • Remove the finials (decorative bits on the ends) from your current pole
  • Measure the bare pole from end to end
  • Order the next standard size up if your measurement falls between standard lengths.

Example.Your existing pole is 230cm (90 ½ inches), without the finials. Since curtain poles come in set lengths (like 240cm, 270cm, etc.), you'd order a 240cm (94 ½ ") pole. Don't worry if it's slightly longer - our poles can be trimmed to fit perfectly.

Method 2: Measuring for a New Pole

Your 3 Measurements:

  1. A = Window recess width.
  2. B = Overhang each side (15-25cm).
  3. Total = A + (2 × B).

Example: 130cm window (A) + 20cm each side (B) = 170cm. (or 51.8 in + 7.8 in x 2 = 66.9 in). You will need 180cm pole. (70.8 inches)

Don't worry if your calculation doesn't match a standard size exactly. Curtain poles typically come in these lengths: 120cm, 150cm, 180cm, 210cm, 240cm, 270cm, 300cm. Simply choose the next size up from your calculation (like in the example above). A slightly longer pole can usually be trimmed to fit perfectly.

Quick Overhang Guide:

  • Small windows: 15cm each side
  • Medium windows: 20cm each side
  • Large windows or heavy curtains: 25-30cm each side

How to Measure for Curtain Pole FAQ

For most windows up to 180cm wide, 20cm on each side is the sweet spot. It's enough to let in lovely light while ensuring privacy when needed. If you have heavier curtains, add a bit more space - they'll thank you for it!

Not at all. The pole measurement stays the same regardless of your curtain style. The pole length depends on your window size, how much overhang you want, and sometimes the thickness of your curtains, not the type of curtain hanging from it.

Sometimes. Here is a quick guide for you:

Lightweight Curtains (Voiles, Nets). These stack quite compactly, so 15cm overhang on each side is usually sufficient.

Medium-Weight Curtains (Cotton, Linen). These need a bit more room to stack neatly - 20cm on each side is ideal.

Heavy Curtains (Blackout, Thermal). These are bulky when gathered, so give them 25-30cm on each side to stack properly and avoid blocking the window.

It's always better to go slightly longer rather than too short. A pole that's a bit too long can often be trimmed, but a pole that's too short simply won't work. When in doubt, add an extra 5cm to your calculation.

Absolutely! Most of our curtain poles can be trimmed to your exact measurements. Use a hacksaw for metal poles and a fine-tooth saw for wooden ones. Always measure twice and cut once!
