What Is A Double Layer Curtain Pole?

Double curtain rods are a practical yet stylish window treatment solution for hanging two layers of curtains simultaneously. The front pole holds your main curtains—whether pencil pleat, eyelet, or pinch pleat—while the back pole supports sheers, voiles, or lightweight day curtains. This layered curtain approach softens your space, provides day-to-night privacy control, and adds a sense of luxury often seen in boutique hotels and high-end interior design.

Perfect for UK homes, double curtain rods systems work exceptionally well in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms where you want both natural light during the day and complete privacy at night.

Key Features of Double Pole Curtain Kits

Our complete double curtain pole kits are designed for easy installation and include:

  • Two lengths of poles - 19mm and 28mm diameter. Lengths from 300cm are supplied in 2 pieces each, with joiners included;
  • 2 or 3 wall fix double brackets, depending on the lengths;
  • Rings, finials, fixing screws, and an easy-to-follow set of fitting instructions.

How to Choose the Best Double Curtain Pole

  1. Window space assessment: First, ensure you have adequate wall space around your windows for double pole installation. Double curtain poles must be wall-mounted rather than ceiling-fixed, so check for sufficient wall area above and to the sides of your window frame.
  2. Bracket projection: Look for systems with adequate spacing between curtain layers—ideally 60-80mm gap for smooth operation. Our double curtain pole sets feature precision-engineered brackets with 118mm and 51mm projections, creating an optimal 67mm separation between front and back poles.
  3. Curtain weight: Ensure that your curtains weigh no more than 5kg total for the back pole (sheers/voiles) and 8kg total for the front pole (main curtains) for safe and reliable operation. If your curtains are a different weight, you can create a custom double set.
  4. Wall type: Consider your wall construction when selecting fixings—plasterboard, brick, and stone walls each require different anchor types. Our kits include appropriate wall plugs for most UK wall construction types.

Our Range of Double Poles

We offer a wide range of style and finish options as well as the lengths:

  • Wide range of finishes: classic satin steel, modern black nickel, antique brass, and chrome;
  • Mix-and-match styles to complement any décor theme;
  • Traditional and contemporary finial designs;
  • Coordinating holdbacks available separately;
  • Lengths from 120cm up to 480cm (with connectors), ideal for large windows or patio doors;
  • Available in 19mm and 28mm pole diameters;
  • Weight capacity - front pole supports curtains of up to 8kg, back pole - up to 5kg.

Design Tip

Pair sheer voiles behind heavier blackout curtains for ultimate style and flexibility—a professional trick interior stylists use for balancing natural light and privacy control throughout the day.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

    Measurement Errors:
  • Incorrect width calculations: Measure the full window width, then add 15–20cm on each side for curtain stack-back. Check our How to Measure for Curtain Poles Guide.
  • Height positioning: Hang poles 10–15cm above the window frame to create the illusion of taller windows.
  • Depth miscalculation: Our brackets in kits have 118 and 51mm projections from the wall. Account for window sill projection and radiator clearance. If you need a bigger projection, consider create a custom Double Curtain Pole Set.
  • Installation Problems:
  • Inadequate wall fixings: Always use correct wall plugs for your surface, especially important in older UK homes with varying wall construction.
  • Insufficient bracket support: Use all double brackets in your kit. Double poles over 300cm should have a centre bracket.

Double Poles FAQ

Can I use different curtain types on each pole?

Yes, this is the main advantage. Common combinations include blackout curtains at the front with sheer voiles behind.

Can I install double curtain poles myself?

Yes, our kits include all necessary fixings and clear instructions. Most customers complete installation in 1-2 hours with basic tools.

I have heavy curtains. Can I still have a layered look with them?

Yes, absolutely! We stock a wide selection of heavy-duty double brackets specifically designed for heavier curtains. While our standard double pole kits support up to 8kg on the front pole, we can create custom double pole sets with reinforced brackets for heavier curtains up to 13kg. Simply contact our specialists and we'll help you choose the perfect solution based on your curtain weight and window measurements.
